Milk: Bottled Beauty

Good nutrition is essential to maintain healthy hair, skin, and nails. Drinking milk regularly helps to keep skin looking fairer, hair shiny, and nails strong.

Acne
Certain nutrients in milk may reduce the severity and frequency of acne. An 8 oz glass of 2% milk has about 10% of the recommended daily value of zinc, which has improved acne in some trials. The same serving provides 15% of Vitamin A, which is sometimes prescribed as an acne treatment to unclog pores and decrease skin inflammation.

Aging
Poor nutrition is a contributor to wrinkles and other external signs of aging. The Mayo Clinic identifies vitamin A as an antioxidant that helps in fighting the effects of aging. Milk also contains high amounts of B vitamins, which all promote healthy skin.

Hair
Beautiful, strong, and healthy hair needs vitamins and protein. A glass of milk contains Vitamin A, B6, biotin, potassium, proteins, lipids, and calcium. These nutrients work to keep hair soft, shiny, and strong.
For example, proteins and lipids help to strengthen hair and calcium promotes hair growth and helps to prevent hair loss.

Nails
Calcium is one of the minerals found in milk that gives fingernails the proper nutrition needed to grow. While drinking milk will support healthy nail growth, it will not make them grow faster. To keep strong fingernails, and help with your calcium absorption, make sure you are also getting Vitamin D, Vitamin K, magnesium, and phosphorous.

Flash Those Pearly Whites!

Have you been making the Tooth Fairy proud? Milk helps build strong teeth and promotes good oral health. Antibacterial properties of milk promote oral health. Drinking milk can also help prevent or reduce tooth decay and contribute to overall better gum health.

Milk and dairy product consumption has been associated with a reduction in cavities with a regular oral hygiene routine. When combined with normal brushing and flossing, the calcium in milk may help to reduce cavities. Milk also contains casein, a protein, which prevents cavity-causing bacteria from sticking to the surface of teeth.

An article from Oral B says, “calcium is a prime ingredient for preventing tooth decay, especially for growing children. Dairy is a great source, with choices such as milk, yogurt and cheese. And calcium isn't hiding in the fat, so skim milk and low-fat yogurt are just as good.”

Milk also contains riboflavin and vitamin D. Both riboflavin and calcium can help in reducing the risk of gum disease. Tooth loss can be avoided with an increase in calcium and vitamin D.

Chocolate Milk: The Ideal Post-Exercise Drink

Nutrients in chocolate milk can help athletes rehydrate and refuel after exercise. Proteins and electrolytes are found naturally in low-fat chocolate milk. Commercial recovery drinks usually add these nutrients during production.

Build Strong Bones and Muscles.
Chocolate milk contains the bone-building nutrients calcium, vitamin D, phosphorus, protein, and potassium. These nutrients help athletes build and maintain strong bones and also reduce the risk for stress fractures. High-quality protein in chocolate milk helps athletes repair and rebuild muscles after a workout.

Get the Exercise Advantage.
Compared to athletes who drank sports beverages with carbohydrates only, athletes who drank low-fat chocolate milk after exercise showed better training times, body composition, and overall fitness. Three studies published in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research can’t be wrong!
Chocolate milk contains B vitamins for energy to get you going, and adding more milk to your diet will add to your total energy intake.

Recover.
The recovery window after a tough workout, which usually lasts two hours, is the ideal time to refuel and rehydrate in order to stay in shape. Researchers at the University of Texas at Austin completed three studies to compare recovery benefits between low-fat chocolate milk and carbohydrate beverages. The study found that drinking low-fat chocolate milk has benefits such as improved performance, quicker exercise adaption, and better body composition.

"Our research suggests that low-fat chocolate milk…can improve performance and aid training for trained and amateur athletes faced with tough routines," said a researcher on the University of Texas at Austin.

So, don’t ignore your recovery window after your next workout. Buy a bottle of our chocolate milk, get more out of your workout, and see the results for yourself!

Celebrate National Dairy Month!

National Dairy Month began in 1937 as National Milk Month. Originally, National Milk Month was used to promote drinking milk and was later changed to National Dairy Month to incorporate other dairy products.

With nine essential nutrients, calcium, potassium, phosphorous, protein, vitamin D, vitamin A, Vitamin B12, riboflavin, and niacin, dairy is a nutrient powerhouse.
  • Calcium: maintain healthy bones and teeth
  • Potassium: regulates body’s fluid balance and maintains normal blood pressure
  • Phosphorous: strengthens bones and generate energy
  • Protein: repairs muscle tissue and generates energy
  • Vitamin D: helps absorb calcium and enhances bone strength
  • Vitamin A: maintains normal vision and skin and helps bones grow
  • Vitamin B12: maintains healthy red blood and nerve cells
  • Riboflavin: converts food into energy and maintains normal eyesight and healthy skin
  • Niacin: digests sugars and fatty acids

Eating dairy products can reduce your risk of high blood pressure, bone disease, fractures, and cavities. It may improve sleep quality, alertness as well as rebuild muscles after physical activity and prevent muscle cramping. Dairy products help you maintain healthy hair, skin, and nails, too!

Frederick County is Maryland’s largest dairy-producing county. The county’s 103 dairy farms and over 14,200 milk cows help to provide one-third of the state’s milk production.

Warm Weather Tips

Warm Weather Woes: Keeping your Milk Cold During Warmer Months

These are tips to keep your delivery items cold through the warmer months!

Freeze water bottles or 2L bottles. Keep them 2/3 of the way full to make sure they don’t explode.

Put your coolers out the night before and by midnight to make sure you get your delivery.

Put extra ice in your cooler to keep milk cold.

Try to use one pound of ice per quart size. Larger ice cubes, blocks of ice, or ice substitutes melt slower than small cubes or shaved ice.

If you order ice cream, make sure you have a separate cooler with dry ice. Make sure you have a lock box for dry ice. Lock boxes are available for purchase or rental through SMC.

Line coolers with aluminized bubble wrap. This keeps the heat out and the cold air inside.

Cut into pieces to line the inside of the cooler, including the top and lid.

Keep your cooler out of direct sunlight and away from warm areas, since can occur as early as 12am and as late as 7pm.

Remember these deadlines for order changes:
  • Tuesday delivery: 11:59pm on Sunday
  • Wednesday delivery: 11:59pm on Monday
  • Thursday: delivery 11:59pm on Tuesday
  • Friday delivery: 11:59pm on Wednesday

EGGcellent eggs

EGGCELLENT EGGS AT SOUTH MOUNTAIN CREAMERY

May is National Egg Month and we’re celebrating by offering BOGO dozen of eggs at Karen’s Kountry Store in Middletown, MD! We want our customers to know the importance of buying a certified humane egg. Happy chickens = a better tasting egg!

EGGcellent egg standards are a high priority at South Mountain Creamery. We achieved our Certified Humane certification in 2011. “The Certified Humane Raised and Handled® program is a certification and labeling program that is the only animal welfare label requiring the humane treatment of farm animals from birth through slaughter. The goal of the program is to improve the lives of farm animals by driving consumer demand for kinder and more responsible farm animal practices. When you see the Certified Humane Raised and Handled® label on a product you can be assured that the food products have come from facilities that meet precise, objective standards for farm animal treatment.” –www.certifiedhumane.org

In addition, We meet the Humane Farm Animal Care program standards which includes nutritious diet without antibiotics or hormones, animals raised with shelter, resting areas, sufficient space, and the ability to engage in natural behaviors.

We built a new and improved chicken house to obtain this certification. Although the house is large enough to hold 110,000 caged chickens, ours houses 17,000 happy and healthy Isa Brown chickens that are temperature controlled, have access to outdoors, are allotted plenty of light, and have plenty of moving room! We provide an all-vegetarian diet high in DHA and Omega 3! You can taste the SMC difference in our eggs at our farm store in Middletown, MD or have them delivered directly to your home!

These standards coincide with that of our entire process: from growth, to production, to processing, packaging and sale. SMC prides itself on being Maryland’s FIRST on-the-farm dairy processing plant. Our process can be referred to “from field to fork!”
